Business Website Redesign Checklist: Preserve What Works

Websites · By ItsDigimark editorial team · · 3 min read

A website improvement does not always need a new theme. Begin by identifying what already works, which customer tasks fail and which pages lack useful information. This makes it possible to improve performance and clarity while preserving a recognisable design.

Record the starting point

Keep a backup of the site and note its pages, forms, tracking identifiers and important URLs. Capture representative desktop and mobile screens where possible. Ask the sales team which questions prospects repeatedly ask; those gaps often point directly to content improvements.

Keep the useful structure

Familiar navigation, typography and colours can stay while content becomes more specific. Improve labels when they are unclear, but avoid moving important controls without a reason. If a service page attracts visitors, preserve its address or define a proper redirect before changing it.

Replace thin content with buying information

Explain deliverables, process, constraints and next steps. Link to relevant portfolio work and supporting guides. A strong page helps a visitor decide whether the service fits their situation. It should also make clear what information is needed for a useful proposal.

Review mobile behaviour

Check menus, dropdowns, tap targets, long headings, tables and form fields at narrow widths. Make sure content is not hidden behind a persistent loader or animation. Test touch interaction as well as desktop hover; a dropdown that only works with a mouse can block important pages.

Check technical continuity

Align canonical URLs, sitemap entries and internal links. Check that the site serves missing pages with a meaningful 404 response and that important images have useful alternative text. Compress suitable images without changing their intended appearance. Preserve existing verification files and analytics identifiers unless a migration requires otherwise.

Test the full enquiry journey

Submit controlled test data only in a test environment or through an agreed production check. Verify field validation, delivery success and honest failure feedback. On the live host, check redirects, certificates and email delivery separately; these cannot be fully established by opening static files on a computer.

Your project checklist

  • Backup and URL inventory
  • Content and conversion priorities
  • Mobile navigation and form checks
  • Canonical and redirect review
  • Host-level checks after upload

A common question

Can SEO improve without a visual redesign?

Yes. Better content, internal links, crawlability and accurate metadata can be implemented within an existing theme. The visual design still needs to support usability.
